School renovation under Mission Education yet to start in some districts
Shillong, Mar 25: The state government has ordered speedy completion of key education infrastructure projects being undertaken across the state.
After conducting a review of all the pending projects on Monday, education minister Rakkam A Sangma said, “We have instructed and directed our officers and implementing agencies to speed up and ensure immediate completion of all pending projects.”
Science and Commerce colleges at Mawphlang, Mahendraganj, Patharkhmah, and Rongjeng; DIET at Williamnagar; and polytechnics in South Garo Hills, West Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills, East Garo Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts are the education infrastructure projects currently undertaken by the government.
Citing delays in some projects due to various factors, including delay by contractors, and technical and land issues, he said, “Efforts are on to resolve all of these issues.”
Of the 38 Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS), four – Mawkynrew, Khararshnong, Laitkor and Rongra – are facing land issues, he said, adding that the respective deputy commissioners and block development officers (BDOs) have been directed to coordinate with the land owners and resolve the issue at the earliest.
Also, 13 EMRS are at different stages of construction and 16 are in the stage of tendering process. The last date of filing tender has been fixed on March 25.
Seven other EMRS are at different stages of documentation.
Meanwhile, he informed that the work was allotted to an agency from Manipur in 2019-20 was entrusted to the state government, following the letter had written to the ministry in this regard.
The minister also said 1,608 schools have been sanctioned for renovation under Mission Education.
While the renovation work has been completed in most districts, some are still lagging behind.
Renovation work has not been started yet in identified schools at Mawsynram and Mylliem in East Khasi Hills, Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills, Amlarem in West Jaintia Hills, Umsning in Ri-Bhoi, Mawthadraishan in Eastern West Khasi Hills, the minister said.
