Govt plans to install CCTV cameras at tourist spots

Shillong, Dec 17: In bid to enhance security measures in an around tourist spots in Meghalaya, the state government has planned to install CCTV cameras at select locations in the state.

“We will take up installing CCTV cameras at places where we feel it is necessary,” Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira said on Tuesday.

The government plan was prompted by the sensational murder of a Madhya Pradesh based tourist, Raja Raghuvanshi, in Sohra last year.

“We will assess the need for cameras in various areas and install them accordingly,” Shira said.

The minister emphasised that the decision to install CCTV cameras would be based on assessments by tourism officers from all districts.

“We will call a meeting, discuss, and get the assessment and report from them, and when they say it is necessary to install CCTV cameras in some places, then we will initiate,” he added.

The minister also highlighted the government’s focus on completing ongoing projects before initiating new ones.

“We have some projects which are yet to be completed, and we have to complete all the projects which are ongoing or are in the process of implementation,” Shira said.

Additionally, Shira said, there are plans to develop block tourism across the state to generate employment opportunities for local youth.
