Shillong, Sep 9: Employment opportunities in government sector are significantly lower than the total employment requirement in the state even as the government has prepared a holistic plan to reduce the employment gap, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed the Assembly on Tuesday.
While around 70,000 youth become eligible to join the workforce each year, the government sector can provide only 2,000-2,500 jobs annually, leaving an employment gap of around 67,500 jobs, according to the Chief Minister.
“There is a deficit of around 67,500 jobs in the government sector, which is why the government is coming up with a holistic plan to cater to the 70,000 youth eligible to join the workforce,” Sangma said.
Sangma mentioned that 7,000 vacancies in various government departments are currently undergoing recruitment.
The Chief Minister while seeking to address the broader employment challenge, outlined the career counselling programme, a key component of the state’s plan. The programme will provide guidance in 25 identified sectors, including defence services, banking, engineering, and more.
Implemented through 34 counselling centres under the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS), trained career advisers will assist youth in preparing for both government and private-sector opportunities. Sangma emphasised that the initiative is designed to ensure that youth are equipped with the skills and knowledge to tap into emerging job markets.
Welcoming the initiative, Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma stressed the importance of targeted support for specific sectors such as defence and army services. The Chief Minister assured that the programme addresses these requirements comprehensively.
Looking ahead, Sangma said the government has mapped job opportunities under Vision 2030, detailing sector-wise employment potential and investment needs.
The tourism sector alone is projected to generate 54,000 jobs, driven by the growth of five-star hotels and demand for drivers and support staff.
“The government has broken down job requirements across departments and, in partnership with MSSDS, will provide career counselling to youth based on anticipated state-level employment over the next decade,” he said.
