Govt to form autonomous body to run National Games 2027

Shillong, Dec 20: The state government on Friday approved the formation of the National Games Secretariat Society, a dedicated autonomous body tasked with planning and executing the 39th National Games, scheduled to be hosted by Meghalaya in 2027.

Addressing the media after chairing a cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, “We have decided to establish, what we call the National Games Secretariat Society, and this is being done to manage the 39th National Games of Meghalaya.”

“This is a procedure that is followed by almost all the states; it is done to ensure that there is an autonomous body that implements and works towards ensuring that the games are successfully conducted. It’s a kind of wing of the sports department itself where the chairperson is the sports minister himself, and the member secretary and other members are officials from the sports department and other departments in the government of Meghalaya.”

The Secretariat Society will function under the direct supervision of the Sports Minister, who will serve as its chairperson, while senior officials from various state departments will constitute the membership. This structure aims to streamline decision‑making, secure inter‑departmental coordination, and mobilize resources efficiently for the upcoming Games.

The 39th National Games, slated for February–March 2027, have already garnered attention as a landmark event for Meghalaya, marking the state’s 55th year of statehood.
