Govt to prioritise Laitumkhrah hawkers’ relocation before city-wide plan

Shillong, July 8: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs on Wednesday said the state government is yet to finalise the relocation plan for street vendors in Shillong.

Dhar said a decision on relocating hawkers in Laitumkhrah is expected within a few days, while work is still on to identify suitable sites in other parts of the city.

“We are yet to finalise. Maybe in a few days’ time we will finalise for Laitumkhrah,” Dhar told reporters.

He added that the exact number of vendors to be relocated is still being worked out.

“For other parts of the city we are in the process of identifying sites. We are yet to get the exact number of how many we will be able to move,” he said.

The Deputy CM said the relocation will be carried out in phases, focusing on areas facing heavy congestion.

“We will do it in a phase-wise manner and we will do it in all crowded places,” Dhar said.
