Govt to set up teacher training academy

Shillong, Nov 26: The state government has decided to establish Meghalaya Teacher Training Academy as an autonomous society to enhance teacher education, capacity building, and professional development.

The proposed society, to be set up under the Directorate of Education Research and Training (DERT), will focus on providing specialised training to teachers across various levels, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

He said the autonomous society will ensure professionals oversee the training process, allowing for more effective and targeted capacity building.

Currently, multiple government agencies and funding bodies conduct teacher training programmes, often with varying degrees of success.

The new academy is expected to streamline these efforts, providing a centralised platform for high-quality training and ensuring that funds are utilised efficiently.

Citing issues of difference in training levels between requirement of the government and the training offered by various funding agencies, he said, “They all do the trainings at their own capacity and their own level which sometimes does not yield the kind of results we would want.”

Underlining the advantage of the proposed society, he said, “Funds will be transferred to this society and training will be conducted at a professional level by the society.”
