Govt utilises 75% funds of over ₹1200-crore transport project

Shillong, Mar 3: Meghalaya has utilised over 75% of the funds under the ₹1238-crore Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP), a strategic initiative to revamp the state’s transport infrastructure.

Commenced on 21 January 2021, MITP’s total expenditure stands at ₹933 crore, of which ₹678.75 crore has been reimbursed by Government of India’s Department of Economic Affairs.

The comprehensive approach is designed to facilitate smoother and safer travel, promote access to essential services, and connect remote areas to major markets.

Of the USD 150-million project aimed at strengthening economic growth and improving quality of life in the state, World Bank loan component is USD 120 million and state’s counterpart funding of USD 30 million.

The project will be closed by October 31, 2026.

So far, 18 projects have been identified in various districts of East and West Meghalaya amounting to ₹45.47 crore. The amount has been funded by the World Bank.

As of now, 11 road projects have been completed and another 6 road projects are in progress.

Under MITP 27 consultancy projects amounting to ₹103.51 crore have been taken up.

This was revealed in the list of Supplementary Demands for Grants and Supplementary Appropriation for 2024-25 tabled in the State Assembly on Friday.

The explanatory notes said an additional amount of ₹5 crore was sanctioned by advance from contingency fund for possibilities and opportunities under the different departments of the state government.

The sanction was made keeping in view people-centric projects under IBDLP which are of common interest and with shared vision to promote water and food security, multiple livelihood and enterprises.

It also seeks to address sustainable development of the eco-systems and sustainability-perspective of such projects under convergence platforms.
