GSU demands crackdown on illegal mining in Rongdik river

Shillong, Dec 3: The Garo Students’ Union has called for an immediate stop to unauthorized extraction activities in in South Garo Hills District and also asked authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to identify and penalize violators involved in illegal sand and gravel mining activities in the Rongdik river, Emangre village in the district.

The Karukol unit of the union alleges that these unlawful operations are threatening the region’s ecosystem, endangering local livelihoods, and violating environmental laws.

“Sand and gravel mining from the Rongdik River is being conducted without authorization and proper regulation, leading to riverbank erosion, depletion of natural resources, and disturbance to aquatic life,” the union stated.

“We call for an urgent halt to all unauthorized extraction activities and demand a thorough investigation to identify and penalize violators,” it added.

The union said it will continue to ‘monitor the situation closely and mobilize community support until this environmental menace is completely stopped.’
