GSU seeks SIT probe in Samgong murder case

Williamnagar, June 25: The Garo Students’ Union has urged Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to order a fresh independent inquiry or constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the murder of a young girl at Samgong in East Garo Hills, alleging that justice has been delayed and the accused remains at large nearly a year after the incident.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister on Thursday, GSU, Eastern Zone, Williamnagar, expressed “deep anguish” over the handling of the case, which took place on July 18, 2025, and said the prolonged delay in apprehending the accused has eroded public confidence in the justice delivery system.

The Union claimed that although a magisterial inquiry had already been conducted, no visible action has been taken on its findings and recommendations. It further alleged that no official has been held accountable for any lapses in the investigation.

The GSU also stated that the victim’s family has not received any compensation, support or reassurance from the government and that “no meaningful justice” has been delivered to them so far.

Seeking immediate intervention, the Union demanded a fresh independent inquiry or an SIT probe into the case, immediate apprehension of the accused, publication of the Action Taken Report (ATR) on the magisterial inquiry, accountability for officials found negligent and adequate compensation and assistance to the victim’s family.

“The prolonged delay in apprehending the accused and the absence of any tangible progress have caused serious concern among the public,” the memorandum stated, warning that such delays could embolden criminals and undermine faith in the rule of law.

The GSU further cautioned that if immediate and effective steps are not taken to ensure justice, it may be compelled to launch public agitations.
