Guv lauds central scheme to promote women health

Shillong, Sep 26: Governor CH Vijayashankar has appreciated Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan terming it one of the key initiatives to empower women at grassroots level in the country.

“The Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan, launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on September 17, 2025, is a significant step towards strengthening women’s health, empowering families, and building a healthier nation,” he said while addressing a health camp at Barapani State Dispensary in Ri-Bhoi district on Friday.

Mentioning that the programme goes beyond healthcare delivery, he said it envisions empowerment of women at the grassroots level and ensures that health services reach mothers, children and students effectively.

The governor also interacted with beneficiaries and distributed food baskets to pregnant women and sanitary pads to adolescent girls.

Emphasising nutrition and menstrual hygiene for adolescent girls, he encouraged mothers to avail healthcare facilities for themselves and their babies.

Maternal and child health is the cornerstone of a progressive society, he said.

The Governor visited stalls put up by the departments of Tuberculosis (TB), Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) and other health services, appreciating the awareness and preventive measures being undertaken by the medical teams.

He, however, expressed concern over high incidence of cancer and tuberculosis in Meghalaya and urged health officials, community workers, and the public to join hands in tackling these pressing challenges.

The governor also directed the Deputy Commissioner and Health Department officials to ensure that the benefits of the Abhiyaan are accessible to the general public across the district.

In his remarks, Vijayashankar underlined that the success of the Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan lies in collective participation, where government, community, and families work together for a healthier Meghalaya.
