Guwahati court summons AICC secretary Manoj Chauhan as Himanta files criminal defamation case

Guwahati, Feb 15: The legal battle between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Manoj Chauhan has escalated, with Sarma filing a criminal defamation case against the Congress leader.

The case, filed in the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, Kamrup Metro, stems from allegations made by Chauhan during a February 11 press conference in Guwahati, where he accused Sarma of investing money in shopping malls and hotel businesses in Dubai and Singapore.

Terming the allegations baseless and unsubstantiated, Sarma moved the court, which has now registered the case under CR 78/2025 and issued a pre-cognizance notice to Chauhan. The court has directed him to appear in person on March 17.

Meanwhile, sources close to Sarma have confirmed that he also plans to file a civil defamation suit against Chauhan, further intensifying the political and legal showdown.
