Harijan Colony relocation: Govt pins hope on defence land

Alternative blueprint ready in case GoI rejects proposal: Dy CM

Shillong, Jan 18: Even is the state government has pinned its hope for defence ministry’s nod to the proposal for allotment of land for relocation of the Harijan Colony, an alternative blueprint has been kept ready in case of Delhi’s rejection of the proposal.

According to the government, the defence land at Mawlonghat is the best possible solution to the long-pending issue of relocation of 342 families of Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong.

The government had proposed to the defence ministry to grant 2.5 to 3 acres of unutilised land in the area just opposite a petrol pump at Iew Mawlong.

“If they (Government of India) can do that I am very sure within no time, we will be able to resolve this issue,” deputy chief minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong said while speaking to reporters here on Friday.

Meanwhile, he said, government has not yet discussed the issue of possibility of dismantling the current gurudwara of the community for the relocation project.

Informing that the Harijan Panchayat Committee wanted the land for relocation near the present colony, the deputy chief minister said, “That is what we are trying to get… If we get (the defence land) nothing like it.”

On the other hand, Tynsong said, the government had prepared a blueprint in case the defence land is not available.

“But if we don’t, we already prepared the blueprint. The government has already prepared everything… it is already in our hands,” he added.

The government is waiting the Centre’s decision on the matter, he said.

“If we get (the land), that may be the best solution,” he added.
