HC allows USTM to withdraw petition

Shillong, July 22: The Meghalaya High Court has allowed the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) to withdraw its petition regarding admission of 36 students without counselling that caused uncertainty in their academic careers.

The USTM made the request to withdraw the petition to enable it to prefer a statutory appeal under provisions of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Act, 2020.

In its order, the court said as the fate of the students hangs in the balance, it expects the appellate authority to favourably consider any delay in preferring the appeal.

The court granted the university to approach the appellate authority “in view of the existence of alternate remedy.

“The matter accordingly stands closed and disposed of on withdrawal, with a liberty granted as prayed,” said the single bench headed by justice HS Thangkhiew in its order passed on Monday.

The decision allows USTM to pursue an alternative remedy and potentially resolve the issue affecting the students’ academic careers.
