Shillong, Feb 3: The Meghalaya High Court has deferred hearing of the case of relocation of Harijan Colony in view of a related matter still pending before the court.
Hearing the petition filed by the Harijan Panchayat Committee against the High-Level Committee constituted by state government, the bench headed by Justice B Bhattacharjee on Monday adjourned the matter for four weeks.
“The learned counsels appearing for the parties submit that the connected matter pending before the Division Bench is yet to be disposed of. In view of the submission, list this matter after 4 (four) weeks,” the bench said in its order.
Relocation of the Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong has remained a contentious issue for over a decade with successive governments struggling to find a permanent settlement.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar recently informed that the government will convene a meeting with the Harijan Panchayat Committee after the upcoming Assembly budget session to discuss the relocation of 342 families from Harijan Colony.
