HC transfers stray dogs case to Supreme Court

Shillong, Sep 26: The Meghalaya High Court has transferred case related to stray dogs to the Supreme Court following a directive from the apex court to all high courts to transfer such cases on the issue.

The High Court had retained the matter, related to PIL titled “City Hounded by Strays, Kids Pay Price”, due to its peculiar nature.

However, the Supreme Court on August 22 directed all High Courts to send all writ petitions on the issue of stray dogs to be transferred to the apex court for analogous consideration.

The high court has now recalled its earlier order dated August 30 and directed the registry to transmit the records of the PIL to the Supreme Court at the earliest.

The decision to transfer the case was made after hearing submissions from the Advocate General and senior advocate Kaustav Paul, who appeared in person.

Both parties concurred that the case should be transferred to the Supreme Court in light of the apex court’s directive.

“…the order of this court dated 30.08.2025 is hereby recalled and the records of the instant PIL (PIL No. 4 of 2024) be transmitted by the Registry of this Court to the Registry of the Supreme Court at the earliest. In view of the above, MC (PIL) No.6 of 2025 is allowed and disposed of,” the division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice HS Thangkhiew and Justice W Diengdoh the bench said in its judgment passed on Friday.
