Tura, March 29: Giving a boost to financial inclusion in the Garo Hills, India’s major private sector bank HDFC opened the state’s 25th branch- Tura’s second HDFC branch, on Saturday morning with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurating the new bank at Araimile, Tura.

The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including former MP Agatha K Sangma, West Garo Hills SP Abraham T Sangma, Tura Municipal Board CEO Rikse R Marak, and St. Mary’s School Principal Father Thomas John.

Speaking at the inauguration, CM Sangma emphasized the critical role of banking infrastructure in driving economic growth, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. “The expansion of banking services in Garo Hills will empower local entrepreneurs, farmers, and youth by providing them easier access to credit and financial tools,” he said. The Chief Minister also called for enhanced financial literacy initiatives and assured government support to address infrastructural challenges faced by banks in remote regions.

Former MP Agatha K. Sangma welcomed the new branch, stating that it would bolster financial services and generate employment opportunities in the region. Meanwhile, retired IFS officer CP Marak, Executive Chairman of MBOSE, highlighted the importance of formal banking in ensuring economic security.

Rikse R Marak, CEO of Tura Municipal Board, urged the bank to focus on financial literacy programs for women and youth, while Father Thomas John offered blessings for the branch’s success and stressed ethical banking practices.
