HSPDP, KHNAM join chorus against Gau Dhwaj yatra

Shillong, Sept 17: Joining the opposition to the proposed Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Tuesday apprehended law and order breakdown and communal tension, if the government allowed the yatra on October 2.

In a letter to chief minister Conrad K Sangma, HSPDP youth wing president Korbariang Syiemlieh said, “We humbly urge you to consider that there may be potential communal tensions and social unrest… controversial involvement of Gau Rakshak groups is a serious concern for the citizens of the state who are very much against the mission and intention of said yatra.”

He urged the chief minister to deny permission for the yatra and further ensure that any yatra or activity in the state promotes social cohesion and respect all communities.

Meanwhile, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) joined the opposition to the Gau Dhwaj Yatra.

In a letter to chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday, KHNAM working president Thomas Passah said, “Keeping in mind the sentiment of the people at large and also ensuring communal harmony in the state, we appeal to the state government to ensure that the intended ‘Gau Prathistha Andolan: Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra’ is opposed and prevented by all means.”

The party also urged the government to take effective preventive measures to stop the yatra in order to build a peaceful Meghalaya.
