IIM Shillong unveils initiatives for community empowerment in NE

Shillong, Nov 9:  IIM Shillong has unveiled three ground breaking initiatives focused on empowering communities, enhancing skills, and transforming educational experiences in the Northeast region.

The initiatives were declared on its 18th Foundation Day on November 7.  The event, attended by distinguished guests including the Governor of Meghalaya, C.H. Vijayashankar, and  Ashish Kumar Chauhan, MD & CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), highlighted the institute’s deep commitment to fostering regional progress and value-based education. It was presided over by Shishir Kumar Bajoria, Chairman of the Board of Governors.

One of the flagship programs unveiled was the Nurturing Minds School Adoption Initiative. This project reflects IIM Shillong’s vision of educational empowerment, as it involves partnerships with Quidotto Memorial RCLP School and Mawkasiang Umroh Presbyterian Secondary School in East Khasi Hills. Aimed at creating a sustainable impact on local education, the initiative will provide resources to empower students, support teachers, and build stronger community connections.

“We believe that real change begins at the grassroots, and these partnerships are our commitment to fostering a brighter future for young learners in Meghalaya,” said Prof. D.P. Goyal, Director of IIM Shillong.

Additionally, the launch of the Skill to Enterprise Model (STEM) in collaboration with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) marks a significant step towards nurturing entrepreneurship in the Northeast. This initiative will provide training, mentorship, and financial assistance to 30 small businesses in the region, with a vision to fuel local economic growth and support aspiring entrepreneurs. The program is set to empower local ventures and cultivate a spirit of innovation and self-reliance among the youth of the Northeast.

Addressing larger regional challenges, the Northeast Enterprise Empowerment Venture (NEEV) was also introduced, which will focus on strengthening community enterprises and tackling critical issues such as climate resilience, migration, and sustainable livelihoods. This initiative underlines IIM Shillong’s commitment to fostering a responsive approach to some of the most pressing socio-economic issues in the Northeast.

Shishir Kumar Bajoria emphasized IIM Shillong’s evolving role in management education. “IIM Shillong is not only committed to academic excellence but also to a vision of development that respects and integrates Indian values. Our goal is to build an institution recognized globally, yet deeply rooted in the spirit of the Northeast.”

The Foundation Day celebrations also featured thought-provoking panel discussions on shaping the future of management education to meet the demands of an uncertain world. Industry experts, including  Bhasmang V. Mankodi from Morgan Stanley,  Ankit Bhargava of Foxberry Technologies, and Asit Jain of Mahavir Beverages, engaged in vibrant dialogues on creating agile leaders who are equipped for the evolving challenges of the corporate landscape.
