Jowai man hospitalised after accidentally shooting himself in the head

Jowai, Aug 11: A Sunday picnic turned bloody after a man accidentally shooting himself in the head with a policeman’s service pistol at Syntu Ksiar, Jowai. The cop, whose gun was fired, said the shooter was inebriated when the incident took place.

The victim, identified as Wanda-O Najiar, was with friends, including Sub-Inspector Wewanroy Challam, Second Officer-in-Charge of Nartiang Police Station, when the incident occurred between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Police said Najiar took SI Challam’s service pistol and began handling it when the firearm accidentally discharged, striking him in the head. SI Challam told investigators that there had been no altercation before the incident and that the shooting was unintentional.

Najiar was initially rushed to MCH, Panaliar, before being transferred to Woodland Hospital, Sabahmuswang, in SI Challam’s personal vehicle. He has since been referred to Woodland Hospital, Shillong, for advanced treatment.

The weapon has been seized for forensic examination, and a show-cause notice has been issued to SI Challam in connection with the incident.
