Supreme Court judge highlights discipline and integrity as core of legal profession
Guwahati, Nov15
Supreme Court judge Ujjal Bhuyan on Saturday underscored that India’s constitutional vision can flourish only when the judiciary remains fully independent and free from external pressures. He was interacting with law students during a session on “From Constitution to Courtroom: Opportunities for the Next Generation of Law Graduates,” organised by the Royal School of Law and Administration at Assam Royal Global University (RGU).
Speaking on the foundational values of the Constitution, he said, “Equality is its central pillar and we need an independent judiciary that remains insulated from external pressures”. He also traced India’s constitutional evolution through landmark cases argued by Nani Palkhivala, including Golak Nath, Bank Nationalisation, Privy Purse and the historic Kesavananda Bharati verdict, offering students a detailed perspective on the development of the basic structure doctrine.
Justice Bhuyan stressed that the legal profession demands discipline, integrity and sustained commitment, describing the Bar as the “school of hard knocks”. He reminded young lawyers that litigation remains the strongest training ground, adding that the true rewards of the profession come from perseverance and ethical clarity rather than glamour.
He urged students to build strong foundations in procedure and evidence and to embrace the challenges of practice early in their careers.
Earlier, RGU vice-chancellor Prof Alak Kumar Buragohain welcomed Justice Bhuyan and said the interaction would inspire students to uphold discipline, diligence and moral values. He commended the Royal School of Law and Administration for creating platforms that combine academic excellence with practical exposure.
