Unprecedented move to impose tax on tea stalls, groceries, etc.
Shillong, Oct 8: For the first time, many small-time Khasi traders now have to pay professional tax as the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) issued notices to these local traders asking them to pay the tax or face action.
The significant step for revenue generation by Voice of the People Party (VPP)-led Executive Committee (EC) is unprecedented for KHADC, allegedly targeting local Khasi business establishments in various villages.
On September 29, the KHADC Superintendent (Professional Tax) issued notices to a wide range of small businesses, including tea stalls, groceries, and hardware shops.
According to the notice, every person carrying on a trade, profession, or calling is liable to pay tax in respect of such trade or profession, as per the Meghalaya Profession Trades, Callings, and Employment Taxation Act.
The traders and shopkeepers have been given 15 days to furnish a return of their income, along with documentary evidence, failing which necessary action will be taken against them in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Act.
The move has sparked concerns among local business owners. The KHADC’s decision to impose professional tax on small traders has raised questions about the Council’s priorities and its impact on the local economy.
