Knowledge of Khasi, Garo mandatory for judicial posts

Shillong, Dec 9: The state government has given its go ahead to new rules for judicial services, making it mandatory for applicants to possess the knowledge of Khasi or Garo language.

It is one of the provisions okayed by the state cabinet while giving its approval to amendments to Meghalaya Judicial Service Rules 2006 and Meghalaya Higher Judicial Service Rules 2015.

The amended rules, as recommended by the judiciary, seek to improve the conduct of examinations, syllabus, and recruitment procedures for judicial services.

“Suggestions were given, for example, that knowledge of the local language of Khasi or Garo will also be mandatory, and we have accepted that recommendation,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said after the cabinet meeting.

The recommendations mostly related to examinations cover syllabus, procedure of direct recruitments, among other aspects of judicial recruitments.

The amendments aim to strengthen the judicial recruitment process and ensure that candidates possess the necessary skills and knowledge to serve in the state’s judicial services.

“Therefore, all those kinds of recommendations were made and we have approved and accepted those recommendations,” Sangma added.
