KSU seeks key changes in DSC functioning

Shillong, Oct 24: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Wednesday demanded for implementation of its 15-point charter of demands to ensure an effective and transparent recruitment and an efficient system in the district selection committee (DSC) East Khasi Hills.

The 15-demand point include appointment of “sufficiently qualified” non-official  person as vice chairman and non-official members in district selection committees (DSCs) with no political affiliations; annual declaration of assets and liabilities by a public servant; applicants to be domicile of Meghalaya and must know Khasi language to be able to apply for any post in DSC in Khasi and Jaintia Hills; adhoc/ contractual/casual appointments to be avoided; annual calendar including key dates for examinations to be published by the DSC; public disclosure of marks secured by all the candidates in any examinations; roll numbers of a candidates and any other changes not to take place in between the recruitment process and carbon copy of the OMR sheet to be supplied to the candidates.

The KSU also emphasised the need to release of answer key after examination and specific time frame to be given for challenging the answer key; recruitment process to be completed within six months from the date of advertisement; abolition of personal interview for Grade B, C and D, annual report by the DSC; question papers to be highly confidential to avoid leakage; creation of Grievance Cell in DSC; and computer based test for mere future.

Claiming several loopholes in the system, the KSU in its letter to deputy commissioner and DSC chairperson, the KSU said the issues related to DSCs need urgent action.

The KSU’s employment monitoring cell chairman Reuben Najiar said the inappropriate functioning of DSC East Khasi Hills had led to unfitting appointments over the years.

“This is injustice towards genuine and capable job seekers,” Najiar said.

Alleging that no advertisement had been issued by the DSC for a long period till recently, the KSU claimed that appointments were carried out in various departments every year.
