New Delhi, Aug 5: Amid relentless opposition protests, a bill to include digital and virtual records as admissible evidence in the courts was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday before the proceedings were adjourned for the day.
As soon as the House reassembled at 2 PM after an earlier adjournment, opposition members continued with their sloganeering refusing to heed to the pleas of the Chair to discuss the Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, 2026.
As the disruptions continued, the Bill was put to vote without a debate and was passed by a voice vote.
Responding to the continuous sloganeering, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said though Congress leader K C Venugopal is a good person, he has not been able to control his party MPs.
Rijiju also accused Congress, communist party and the Samajwadi party of being against Lord Ram and demanded that they apologise to the nation.
Besides seeking response from the government over police action against students protesting at Jantar Mantar here and in other parts of the country over the NEET paper leak, the Opposition has also been protesting over alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
The Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, 2026, will repeal or replace the Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, 1891.
Earlier when the House met in the morning, Speaker Om Birla lamented that protesting members have not been allowing the Question Hour to function since the Monsoon Session began on July 20.
He said that raising slogans inside or outside House is not good for democracy. As protests continued, Birla had adjourned the House till 2 PM. (PTI)
