Can create an economy out of music, arts and culture: CM
Shillong, Mar 11: In a special recognition for Meghalaya, a documentary on Khasi culture “The Blood and the Border” by Wanphrang K Diengdoh, will be screened in London, chief minister Conrad Sangma told the state assembly on Monday while listing government initiatives to promote the state’s unique cultures.
“This is the kind of exposure and support that Meghalayan Age Limited and Tourism department offer not just for Wanphrang but dozens of filmmakers are financially supported… to bring out our history, document the different cultures,” he said.
The documentary will be screened at Portland Hall in London on March 14.
“The script of this move took almost 2-3 years to make… it is a proud moment for us to see that our culture and the history of our people will be showcased in London,” he said.
Similarly, many other filmmakers are being supported by the government, he added.
Lamenting the criticism by some sections about the government hosting concerts and bringing artistes from outside, he said, “These are necessary investments we need to make. That is how the concert economy works.”
“We need a USP or a particular artiste to be the attraction to come in and the overall eco-system of the music industry grows… it is part of the larger goal,” he said.
He also mentioned about Meghalaya Grassroot Music Programme (MGMP) under which the government has paid over Rs 17.5 crore to over 3,617 artistes, who have performed in 7,621 shows across the state in the past 3 years.
“Let me assure the House… our target is to reach 43,800 youths… even if it means doubling or tripling this budget,” he said.
The CM further that the government has invested over Rs 10 crore under Hello Meghalaya by supporting over 450 artistes, who are Khasi, Garo and Pnar content creators.
“Music, arts and culture and movie making is not just about entertainment. Actually we can create an economy out of it… jobs have been created… we must continue to invest in this sector as there is a natural talent and competitive advantage that the state and the youths have in this line,” he said.
