Shillong, Oct 21: In a major anti-narcotics operation, over 10 tonnes of illegally cultivated cannabis (ganja) spread across 5 hectares of land were destroyed at Laitlulong, Sohiong in East Khasi Hills district on Tuesday.

“The multi-department team systematically cut down the illegally grown cannabis plants from the entire 5-hectare area. Following the operation, the seized Ganja was destroyed at the site itself through controlled burning, ensuring complete elimination of the contraband as per established protocols,” Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said.
The operation was carried out by East Khasi Hills district police in collaboration with district administration, Forest department, Excise department, and the State Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF).

Successful execution of the multi-departmental operation demonstrates a zero-tolerance approach toward drug-related crimes and commitment to protecting our society from the menace of narcotic substances, Syiem said.
Cultivation of cannabis is an offence and will attract relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he added.
