Man killed in rhino attack in Pobitora

Guwahati, Sept 29: In a shocking incident a 40-year-old man, Saddan Hussain, lost his life after being attacked by a wild rhino at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon district on Sunday morning.

The incident took place at around 9 am in the Hadugor area, about 500 meters from the sanctuary’s forest range office. The rhino had strayed from the sanctuary and was attempting to re-enter the forest when it encountered Saddan, who was riding a bike from Mayong to Chamata.

Saddan, who hailed from Kachutoli near Sonapur, had been passing through the area when the rhino attacked him. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he was declared dead upon arrival. Local residents expressed concern that forest and police officials were slow to respond to the incident, even though they had been informed.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is well known for having the highest density of rhinos in India, with 107 rhinos counted in the 2022 census. Rhino movement is common in the area, and authorities are investigating the incident to confirm the details surrounding the attack.
