Shillong, March 10: One Michael Marak has been convicted in a 2013 murder case and ordered to serve a further two years and eight months in prison, completing a three‑year sentence handed down this month.
A statement issued by the Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Tuesday said an FIR was lodged on May 15, 2013, at Rynjah police station alleging that Marak stabbed Nilu Sangma after an argument. Sangma later died of his injuries.
Investigators filed a chargesheet under Section 302 IPC, and Marak was held in judicial custody for three months and 22 days during trial.
On March 2, 2026, the court of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial), East Khasi Hills, convicted Marak in Session Case No. 20(T)/2014, referencing Rynjah P.S. Case No. 36(05)2013 originally registered under Section 304 Part‑II IPC. The court directed him to serve the remaining term of two years and eight months, with an additional two months if he defaults on a fine.
The investigation was supervised by Inspector S.K. Sangma, now posted with the Anti‑Narcotics Task Force in Shillong.
