Manipur NPP chief N Kayisii passes away

Shillong/Imphal, Jan 18: Former Manipur minister and National People’s Party (NPP) state president N Kayisii died after a prolonged illness in Imphal on Saturday. His death has been widely condoled, including by NPP leaders of Meghalaya.

In his condolence message, Meghalaya chief minister and NPP national president Conrad K Sangma termed him as “a humble servant of the people”. “Shri Kayisii’s demise is a tremendous loss to the people of Manipur and to the entire NPP family,” Sangma wrote on social media.

He also described Kayisii as “a man of the masses” and lauded his invaluable contributions to the party. “We have lost an able leader. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and supporters. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he added.

An MLA from Makhan Khuman Tadubi constituency in Senapati district, 58-year-old Kayisii was the minister for Tribal and Hill Areas in Manipur government from 2017 to 2020.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh visited the NPP leader’s residence at Lamphel, Imphal to offer condolences to his family. “Kayisii was soft-spoken, a very good man and a good leader. I had contacted him twice while he was ill. Very sorry over the loss,” Singh said.

“His service to the people of Manipur and his commitment to the well-being of our state will always be remembered,” the chief minister later wrote on X. Kayisii was first elected to Manipur Legislative Assembly from Tadubi in 2017 and later re-elected in 2022. He was instrumental in strengthening the NPP’s foothold in the state. (With PTI inputs)
