Mawlai candidates to campaign through ‘common platform’

There will be no public meeting for individual candidate or party in Mawlai: ADC

Shillong, Jan 22: As an exception, there will be no individual or party-centric public campaign for the upcoming autonomous district council (ADC) elections in Mawlai constituency.

Mawlai Town Dorbar and the candidates from the constituency in East Khasi Hills district have decided to hold their campaigns from common platforms only.

The initiative taken by Dorbar aims at ensuring a distraction-free election for student voters, as the election period coincides with Board and University examinations.

This decision was taken during a meeting between the Dorbar and the candidates, who have declared their intent to contest the elections. The meeting, held on Tuesday, was convened to streamline the campaigning process and address community concerns.

“Common platforms will be established in every area of Mawlai,” said Marco Mitri, secretary of the dorbar.

He explained that this decision also means that candidates and political parties would no longer organise individual public meetings as seen in past elections.

“The MTD and the candidates believe that we will avoid creating a spectacle in the upcoming election,” said Mitri.

The decision was made with the students in mind, as many are preparing for various examinations. “We do not want to disturb their studies during this critical period,” Mitri added.

Strict guidelines have been put in place for these Common Platforms. Flags representing political parties will not be allowed in the Common Platform except for the candidate, clarified Mitri.

The meetings on these Common Platforms will be organised and conducted by the respective headmen and secretaries while only the candidates will be allowed to speak.
