Shillong, Apr 23: Keeping in view the power consumers’ response to the One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has extended the scheme till the end of April for recovery of long-pending electricity bills.

“OTS Scheme 2025 was effective till March 31, but after seeing the response, we have extended it till the end of this month,” power minister AT Mondal told reporters on Tuesday.

OTS scheme 2025 is applicable for “Domestic Low Tension (DLT)” and “Kutir Jyoti/ BPL” consumers having a declared load of 5 KW and below and whose lines were disconnected due to non-payment of bills.

Chief minister Conrad K Sangma launched the OTS scheme for MeECL consumers on March 4.

Under the scheme, over Rs 26 crore of surcharges and penalties will be waived, benefitting around 45,000 consumers, the power minister said.

The OTS allows the consumers, who have defaulted on paying power bills, to pay 40% of the principal amount and the remaining 60 per cent in five equal instalments without interest.

The MeECL’s total consumer outstanding dues stand at around Rs 119 crore.
