Meghalaya destroys seized narcotics worth over Rs 9 crore

Shillong, Jan 29: In a significant move to combat drug abuse, the District Drug Disposal Committee of seven districts in Meghalaya destroyed seized narcotic drugs worth over Rs 9 crore at Star Cement Ltd, Lumshnong in East Jaintia Hills on Thursday.

The destroyed drugs include 183.28 grams of heroin, 8.721 kgs of Yaba tablets, 296.79 kgs of ganja, 2793 bottles of codeine-based cough syrups, and 534 R-7 tablets, seized in 58 NDPS cases across seven districts.

“This action was undertaken as part of the broader vision of Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM), Meghalaya, which was launched by the Chief Minister in the year 2023,” said Superintendent of Police (ANTF) Pankaj Rasgonia in a statement.

The destruction of drugs is a strong message of collective resolve to make society free from drugs and addiction, he added.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has been leading the DREAM initiative, which combines enforcement, rehabilitation, awareness, and community participation to tackle the drug menace.

The event was part of Meghalaya’s ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking, with the state government setting up de-addiction centers in all 12 district headquarters.
