Shillong, Feb 17: Meghalaya has made its mark on the international stage at BIOFACH 2026, the world’s leading trade fair for organic food and agriculture, showcasing its community-driven organic ecosystem and emerging as a key player in North East India’s organic sourcing landscape.
“Meghalaya’s organic development roadmap is anchored in institutional strength, ecological sustainability, and market integration,” Commissioner & Secretary Dr. Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner and Secretary said, highlighting the state’s progress in organic farming.
The delegation, led by the Commissioner & Secretary, engaged with international buyers, certification agencies, and development institutions to explore partnerships and collaborations.
Farmer representatives Trinity Saioo and Ringnang Kongkal Sangma shared their experiences, emphasizing the importance of quality, certification, and collective marketing.
“Coming to Germany and attending BIOFACH was like a dream come true,” said Trinity Saioo, a turmeric farmer from Jaintia Hills.
“BIOFACH helped me understand international expectations for organic spices like black pepper,” added Ringnang Kongkal Sangma, who grows black pepper in Garo Hills.
Meghalaya’s participation highlights its commitment to connecting producers directly with global markets, strengthening their understanding of quality, certification, and branding.
The state’s organic expansion is driven by the State Organic Mission 2028, targeting one lakh hectares under certified organic cultivation.
