Shillong, Aug 11: The Meghalaya Tourism Department has exempted beneficiaries under the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Homestay Mission Scheme (CMMHMS) from obtaining building permission from the KHADC, GHADC, JHADC or MUDA for the disbursal of loans sanctioned under the scheme.
An official order issued by the department said the exemption was intended to support unemployed local youth, rural residents and other beneficiaries who require government and formal institutional assistance to create livelihoods, employment and income-generation opportunities.
The state has set a target of developing 2,500 homestays and 10000 jobs by 2028, as part of efforts to expand tourism opportunities and create livelihoods for local communities.
The order, issued by C.S. Khongwir, Joint Secretary, Tourism Department, has been circulated to the Director of Tourism, Deputy Commissioners, tourist officers and the Chairman of Meghalaya Rural Bank for information and necessary action.
The Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Homestay Mission is a state Tourism Department initiative aimed at expanding and improving homestay accommodation while creating livelihood and employment opportunities for local residents.
Under the 2026-27 Budget, the government announced support for 1,000 homestays during the financial year. The government allocated ₹70 crore for accelerated implementation of the mission.
