Meghalaya has right to say no to uranium mining: Chandee

Shillong, Aug 26: Meghalaya has the right to say no to uranium mining, Gambegre MLA Mehtab Chandee A Sangma said in the Assembly on Monday as she pointed out at the “perceived risk”, which is too high.

“Uranium today may be a strategic resource for the nation, but Meghalaya also has its own right to say no to certain resources and they must remain untouched, especially when the perceived risk to our environment, communities and future generations is too great,” Mehtab Chandee said while supporting the government resolution against uranium mining tabled by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in the Assembly.

She said development must ensure protection of the state’s core strengths.

“Development should ensure that it protects our people, our water, our forests and, much more importantly, our land,” she said.

The NPP legislator, who is also the wife of the Chief Minister, said she wholeheartedly supports the resolution.

“I am happy that this august House has been unanimous in its decision to adopt this resolution,” she added.
