Meghalaya HC reviews crematorium plan, 46 sites identified across 4 districts

Verification for remaining sites underway

Shillong, July 16: The Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday took on record the state’s action taken report on crematoriums, noting that 46 of the 60 proposed sites have been identified and sanctioned so far.

Hearing a PIL filed by Seng Khasi Hima Crematorium, a bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh was informed that ₹1 lakh per site has been released to district administrations.

According to the report, 34 sites in East Khasi Hills, 3 in Eastern West Khasi Hills, 6 in Ri Bhoi and 3 in South West Khasi Hills have been cleared.

Verification for the remaining sites is underway and 6 more locations are yet to be identified for additional crematoriums.

On burial grounds, the Additional Advocate General sought time to get instructions, which the court granted.

The matter will be heard next on September 14, 2026.
