Shillong, Jan 23: Proving it means business when it comes to tackling the menace of narcotic smuggling, Meghalaya government has launched a special Drug Disposal Programme and destroyed a whopping Rs 53.86 crore worth of illegal narcotics, the largest disposal in recent times, that have been seized from across the state at an event in East Jaintia Hills on Thursday.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma launched the special programme in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong, Sniawbhalang Dhar, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, and Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang at Star Cement Limited, Lumshnong.
Senior police officials, including DIG (Eastern Range) and representatives from civil society and the media fraternity were also present to witness the event.
The destruction of the seized narcotics valued at Rs 53.86 crore, included Rs 23.98 crore worth of heroin, Rs 7.6 crore worth of ganja, and Rs 21.3 crore worth of crystal methamphetamine.
These substances were incinerated as per the guidelines of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, ensuring transparency and strict adherence to the law.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister reiterated the state government’s commitment to the war against drugs.
“Today’s disposal of drugs underscores our commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking in Meghalaya. This is a strong message to the community that we are serious about this fight and will continue to take decisive action”, he said.
The chief minister lauded the police and other departments involved in tackling the drug menace saying, “The police, under the leadership of the DGP, have done a commendable job. This programme is an example of the collective efforts by all stakeholders to eliminate drug abuse in the state.”
DGP Idashisha Nongrang assured the public of complete transparency in the disposal process.
“Every step has been conducted following the law, and the entire process is being documented to maintain accountability,” she said.
Star Cement Limited facilitated the incineration process by providing its high-temperature facilities.
This initiative is a continuation of the government’s war on drugs, which includes the establishment of dedicated Anti-Narcotics Task Force teams and specialized police stations across the state. Further disposals are planned, with necessary legal approvals already in process.
