Meghalaya to have River Master Plan for 10 river basins

Shillong, Jan 21: A River Master Plan for the state’s 10 river basins of south flowing rivers that meet with Brahmaputra is under preparation by the Brahmaputra Board and the state government.

With state-of-the-art technology, the River Master Plan aims at collecting comprehensive multi-sectoral water-related data and information.

The Plan will also have provisions for recommendations for sustainable utilisation of water resources across key sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, forestry, industries, and tourism.

Besides, it will contribute to development of an integrated river basin management plan.

The initiative is “historic and vital” for Meghalaya’s economic development and livelihood improvement, said Dr Ranbir Singh, chairman of Brahmaputra Board, after a meeting with additional chief secretary in-charge Water Resources, Dr PS Ahammed, here recently.

He also highlighted the critical role of water in addressing challenges like scarcity, floods, and soil erosion, and urged all stakeholders to actively participate by sharing data and identifying sectoral needs.

In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Brahmaputra Board and the Department of Water Resources for an integrated water rejuvenation and development project in Shiliang Um, East Khasi Hills.

The officials expressed hope that this initiative will transform Meghalaya’s approach to water management, benefiting communities and fostering sustainable economic growth, according to an official statement.

“This is not just a plan but a roadmap for the future of Meghalaya, ensuring water resources are utilized effectively for generations to come,” it said.

The initiative marks the beginning of a new chapter in Meghalaya’s development, with a focus on community welfare, environmental sustainability, and economic progress, it added.
