MHRC notice on police ‘torture’ on Sohra teenager

Shillong, July 9: Mother of a 19-year-old boy from Sohra has moved the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) over alleged police torture on the boy at Sohra police station, prompting MHRC to slap a notice on East Khasi Hills police.

MHRC chairperson (Retd) justice T Vaiphei said the Commission will take further action once it receives district police chief’s reply on the matter to be submitted by July 31.

According to the complaint, Mildred Jyrwa took her son Getwin Jyrwa to Sohra police station after learning that the police were looking for him.

However, when she picked him up in the afternoon, she was shocked to find him seriously injured.

Getwin was subsequently taken to Sohra Civil Hospital and later referred to Shillong Civil Hospital for further treatment.

The mother said if her son had committed a crime, the police should have followed due process, instead of beating him up causing serious injuries.
