Imphal, Aug 4: Security forces arrested a 42-year-old militant belonging to a proscribed outfit in Manipur’s Kakching district and seized a cache of arms and ammunition in a separate operation in Kangpokpi, police said on Tuesday.
The self-styled major of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (Apunba) was apprehended from his residence in Wangoo Mameiching area on Monday, a police statement said.
In a separate operation, security forces seized a cache of arms and ammunition in the hill range of Makokching jungle under the Saikul Police Station limits in Kangpokpi on the same day, it said.
“The recovered weapons include an M16 rifle, seven pistols, one Mark III rifle, one sniper rifle, one .22 bolt-action gun, 25 single-barrel guns, 76 live rounds of ammunition of different calibres, four pumpis, three hand grenades and twenty detonators,” the police statement said.
Four radio sets were also recovered during the operation.
Security forces have been conducting search operations and area domination exercises in vulnerable areas across Manipur since ethnic violence broke out two years ago.
More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. (PTI)
