MP Rakibul Hussain attacked in Rupahihat; sparks political uproar

Miscreants armed with cricket bats assault Dhubri MP; Congress blames BJP for political vendetta

Guwahati, Feb 20: In a shocking act of violence, Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain was brutally attacked by a group of masked miscreants at New Bazar in Rupahihat, Nagaon district, on Thursday.

The attack, which was caught on video, has triggered massive political outrage, with Hussain directly blaming Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for orchestrating it.

The incident unfolded when Hussain and his son Tanzil Hussain were riding a two-wheeler to attend a party meeting in Puthikhaiti. Suddenly, a group of masked attackers armed with cricket bats and sticks ambushed them, striking Hussain and causing him to collapse on the road. His personal security officers (PSOs) attempted to shield him, but they were overpowered and beaten up.

The miscreants also damaged Hussain’s vehicle, snatched its keys, and left him and his team stranded. In a desperate bid to disperse the attackers, security personnel fired shots in the air, but the assailants remained unfazed.

The attack has sparked a political firestorm, with Hussain directly accusing CM Himanta Biswa Sarma of orchestrating the assault.

“This was a cowardly attack planned by Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is afraid of losing power. He should resign as Home Minister if he cannot ensure law and order,” Hussain said.

He further alleged that lack of security arrangements enabled the attack, but dismissed the idea of filing an FIR, stating, “FIRs don’t work when Himanta Biswa Sarma is the Home Minister. Assam is turning into a lawless state.”

The Congress lashed out at the BJP-led Assam government, linking the attack to the upcoming Assembly elections.

“BJP’s popularity is sinking, so they are resorting to muscle power. But democracy cannot be won through violence,” said Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah.

He demanded immediate arrests of those involved, warning that if the government failed to act, Congress would launch democratic protests.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from political and student organizations, including All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU),  Muslim Students Union of Assam (MSUA), Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal and AAP Assam.

They have all demanded strict action against the attackers and urged the government to ensure political violence does not escalate in the run-up to elections.
