Shillong, Oct 10: Two incidents of children gone missing and later found dead have caused worries for the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR), prompting the latter to seek for a time-bound investigation by police into the incidents.
Expressing shock over the tragic incidents of disappearance and subsequent deaths of a seven-year-old boy from Nongrah, East Khasi Hills and a 13-year-old girl from Khyndewso, Ri-Bhoi, MSCPCR chairperson Agatha K Sangma on Friday said, “It is imperative that those responsible are identified and brought to justice without delay.”
She also extended condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with them during the time of distress.
She said the Commission is alarmed by the recent surge in cases of missing children across the state and takes this disturbing trend with the utmost seriousness.
“In response, the Model Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Tracing Missing or Kidnapped Children have already been submitted to the government for urgent implementation, to ensure timely and effective intervention in such cases,” Sangma informed.
She assured that the Commission remains committed to safeguarding the rights and well-being of all children in Meghalaya and will continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies, government departments, and other stakeholders to prevent such tragedies in the future.
