Muster roll workers seek EPF, maternity leave in all depts

Veterinary Dept lauded for absorbing muster roll workers into Group D posts

Shillong, Sept 4: Muster roll workers in Meghalaya have resolved to step up efforts to pursue their various demands, including EPF and maternity leave across departments, with the State Government.

The decision was announced as All Meghalaya Muster Roll Progressive Workers Union (AMMRPWU) reorganised itself with induction of new office bearers.

With new office bearers on board, the Union will now pursue demands submitted to various departments, including Labour department, said Bympher Lyndem, general secretary of the Union.

Advocate Erwin K Syiem Sutnga has been elected as adviser of the Union while KL Pariat continues as adviser of the Joint Action Committee, Lyndem said.

“We have achieved some of the demands that we had placed before the Government,” he said.

However, he said, implementation of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and maternity leave benefits remained inconsistent.

On EPF, Lyndem said orders for implementation have been issued but compliance varies.

“There are departments that have implemented it and there are departments that have not yet implemented it,” he said, adding the Union will continue its follow-up measures.

On maternity leave, he said, “There are offices that have implemented it and there are also those that have not yet implemented it.”

Appreciating the Veterinary department for absorbing muster roll workers into Group D posts, Lyndem said, “All eight muster roll workers have got jobs” in the department, and expressed hope that other departments would follow suit.
