NEC school projects completed in state

Shillong, July 5: Several projects of building school infrastructure funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC) have reached completion stage in Meghalaya.

One of them is construction of Boys’ and Girls’ Hostel Blocks at Capt Williamson Sangma Memorial College, Baghmara. The project, sanctioned in June 2021 at a cost of ₹1.67 crore, was completed on June 16, according to the NEC.

The project was undertaken with the objective of improving access to higher education for students from remote areas of the district, said the NEC.

The newly constructed hostels are intended to accommodate students from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), thereby removing a key barrier to pursuing higher education, it added.

Other projects undertaken with NEC funds include upgradation of Ramakrishna Mission schools in East Khasi Hills (Mawsynram/Shella-Bholaganj) and South West Khasi Hills (Ranikor). The NEC said the upgradation works were completed on June 24.

The project, sanctioned in 2020 at the cost of ₹4.3 crore, aimed at providing accessible, affordable, and quality education to children from families of marginal workers in remote and underserved areas, the NEC said.

With the completion of this project, total student enrolment is expected to increase by approximately 45.2%, enabling around 523 students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families to access higher secondary education annually, it added.
