GUwahati, Nov 21: The North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC), based in Byrnihat and operating under the North Eastern Council (NEC) and Ministry of DoNER, has partnered with Amazon India to bolster market opportunities for artisans, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and clusters in the northeastern region.
This collaboration aims to highlight the region’s exceptional craftsmanship in bamboo and cane products while empowering local artisans to reach global markets.
Amazon India’s team visited NECBDC and participated in an exhibition featuring a diverse range of bamboo and cane products. The mini-exhibition served as a showcase of the region’s rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship, enabling Amazon to assess products for potential inclusion on its platform.
A workshop provided artisans with critical insights into selling on a global e-commerce platform. Topics covered included compliance requirements (e.g., GST registration), inventory management and advertising strategies.
This collaboration aims to improve the economic prospects of artisans by creating direct access to larger markets. By aligning with global e-commerce standards, the artisans and SHGs are expected to see increased income, which in turn could foster socio-economic development across northeastern communities.
As part of the initiative, the Amazon team is set to visit the Kakopathar Bamboo Cluster in Tinsukia, where they will directly interact with artisans to understand their production processes and explore opportunities for global exposure.
Gaurav Bhatnagar, Director of Sales at Amazon, highlighted the significance of the Northeast’s cultural heritage, saying: “The Northeast’s bamboo and cane products are a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage and unparalleled craftsmanship. Through our Karigar Program, we are committed to providing these artisans with access to global markets, ensuring their art finds the recognition it deserves.”
The programme is designed to empower local artisans by showcasing their products on a global e-commerce platform, fostering recognition and market access.
NECBDC’s Managing Director MC Omi Ningshen emphasized the importance of this collaboration, saying: “This initiative marks a pivotal step in bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern marketplaces. As facilitators, we aim to empower these communities through multiple collaborations and partnerships.”
NECBDC is determined to modernize the bamboo and cane sector in the Northeast, striving to create sustainable livelihoods and enhance the socio-economic framework of the region.
This partnership represents a critical step toward preserving the region’s cultural identity while ensuring economic growth. By leveraging Amazon’s Karigar Program, artisans will gain access to new markets, increased visibility, and a pathway to sustainable growth. NECBDC’s continued collaboration with industry leaders like Amazon underscores its commitment to building a thriving ecosystem for artisans, blending tradition with modernity for long-term success.
