NEIGRIHMS holds event to raise awareness on Alzheimer’s disease

Shillong, Sept 22: The need for early recognition of dementia symptoms to focus on preventive care was highlighted by Prof Dr C Daniala, Medical Superintendent of NEIGRIHMS during an awareness held at the institute on World Alzheimer’s Day, on Saturday. Prof Daniala also emphasized how timely diagnosis with available investigations can help differentiate Alzheimer’s from other forms of cognitive decline.

The Department of Neurology, NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, organised a poster making competition to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia on the theme, “Time to Act on Dementia, Time to Act on Alzheimer’s Disease,”.

During his address, Prof (Dr.) A. Santa Singh, Dean, NEIGRIHMS praised the Neurology Department for organising the event, noting that raising awareness through such initiatives is crucial in addressing the stigma around dementia.

Prof. Dr. Nalin Mehta, Director, NEIGRIHMS, lauded the participants for their creative contributions and highlighted the critical role of caregivers in managing dementia, calling for increased societal support for both patients and their families. In the absence of a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, he emphasised on the need to educate and train family members of patients with Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, so that the helpless patients are cared for with dignity and respect.

These messages underscored the hospital’s mission to take proactive action on dementia, urging both medical professionals and the public to become more vigilant and supportive in managing this growing health challenge.

The competition was held in three categories: Nursing Officers, Interns & Resident Doctors, and OPD staff of various departments. Winners in each category were recognized for their creativity and contribution to spreading awareness. NEIGRIHMS Hospital’s dedicates itself to enhance knowledge in educating the staff and the public on the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in managing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

The prize distribution ceremony featured key messages from several distinguished dignitaries.
