Shillong, Dec 30: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has demanded for capital punishment for perpetrators of the brutal assault on Tripura youth Angel Chakma, leading to his death in Uttarakhand recently.
“NESO vehemently condemns such atrocities perpetrated against the North East people,” NESO stated in a memorandum to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday.
The NESO pointed out that such harassment is a recurring threat to students and residents from the region staying in different parts of India.
Demanding capital punishment for the perpetrators, NESO also sought establishment of at least one special police station dedicated for dealing with cases related t racial discrimination and atrocities on NE people.
It also demand for immediate enactment of a stringent Anti‑Racism Act to address racial hate crimes.
Chakma was brutally beaten and stabbed in Dehradun on December 9, 2025 and succumbed to his injuries on December 26 after a two‑week hospital battle.
His brother, Michael Chakma, was also assaulted in the same incident.
