New excise rules to raise revenue by Rs 90 crore

Shillong, Sep 11: The state government has approved the Meghalaya Excise Amendment Rules 2025 with an eye on generating additional revenue of Rs 90 crore.

The new rules will lead to reclassification of IMFL brands, introduction of a general brand category, revision of ad valorem on beer, and changes to several rules.

IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor) brands will be reclassified to ensure more competitive pricing, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said after a cabinet meeting on Thursday.

A new general brand category will be introduced to provide more options for consumers and ad valorem on beer will be revised to make beer prices more competitive.

Estimated revenue increase because of these amendments will be around Rs 90 crore, he said.
