New Governor Vijayashankar promises to do justice to Meghalaya issues

Shillong, July 30: Newly sworn in Governor of Meghalaya and two time Mysuru MP and minister CH Vijayashankar on Tuesday pledged to work with the NDA-led state government headed by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma promising to do justice to the demands of the people.

The new governor said that he is aware of the state’s local issues that include the demand for inner line permit (ILP) and assured to “give justice to them”.

Vijayashankar was sworn in as governor by the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court S Vaidyanathan at Shillong’s Raj Bhavan in presence of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, cabinet ministers, senior government officials and other dignitaries.

Interacting with media persons after taking charge of office, Governor Vijayashankar said it was an opportunity to serve Meghalaya and heaped praise on President of India Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“I have served as an MLA, an MP and also been a minister, but this position of governor is a really big responsibility on the shoulders,” said governor Vijayashankar.

The new governor was literally swept off his feet with the clean image of the state and lauded the people of Meghalaya for making cleanliness as their top priority.

Promising to take everyone along, he said, “Not only the government, bureaucracy, I take everybody into confidence and the only (agenda is) development. I don’t have any personal or political agenda,” assured the new governor, adding that he would wish for the people of the state to remember him as an honest and development oriented governor.

“Meghalaya people should always remember (like this). In that way I am ready to give my time, I am ready to work (for the people),” he stated.

Recalling his entry into Parliament as a new MP, he said Late Purno A Sangma was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and it was a privilege to serve the state from where Late Sangma hailed.

“When I entered parliament for the first time as MP, Purno A Sangma was the speaker and now when I came here as governor, his son Conrad K Sangma is the chief minister. I know the family well. Moreover, the NDA government is here and I take everybody into confidence as ultimately we have to run the government very smoothly and always have to give maximum priority and importance to the government of the state,” said governor Vijayashankar.

Whether he would take up with the Centre for immediate implement of the ILP to address the influx issue, the governor said, “For your information I tell you I also belong to that community and I am coming from the same community, the community that you addressed now, the same community I belong, nothing to worry, I know the local issues here. Long back I had come to Meghalaya when I was in the parliamentary standing committee on railways as a member of parliament, twice I had visited Meghalaya, many times I have come here but officially I have never addressed the media. This is the first time I am going to address here. I know the regional issues and all those issues will be kept in mind and let us try to do and give justice to them.”
