New pay for SSA, Adhoc teachers to cost Rs 817 cr

Teachers to get new pay structure with effect from April 1

Shillong, Feb 5: The state government will spend an additional Rs 817 crore annually to implement the new pay structure for over 23,000 Adhoc and SSA teachers with effect from 1 April 2026.

The decision aims at addressing the long-standing demands for a standardized pay structure and job security for teachers.

“The total amount that will be spent (for implementing) this structured pay framework to teachers is approximately Rs 817 crore. This will be the annual (financial) impact on the state government,” Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma after a cabinet meeting on Thursday.

“So all of this will happen in the next 60 days and we will be implementing the new structured pay framework by 1 of April 2026,” he announced.

The new framework includes a yearly increment program, enhanced base salary based on seniority, and provisions for Contributory Provident Fund (CPF) contributions.

The implementation process will be finalized over the next two months, with the new pay structure coming into effect on 1 April 2026.

“(In the) next two months, we will work out the nitty-gritty other important interventions that need to be taken because this is a reform that we are doing and the reform will have multiple aspects and hence, while we give the teachers the structured framework, there are other structures or restructure that will take place within the schools also,” the CM stated.
